What is THC?

An educational guide to understanding Tetrahydrocannabinol, its effects, and how it differs from other cannabinoids.

The Basics

THC (Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. It is the chemical responsible for the "high" associated with cannabis use.

When consumed, THC interacts directly with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), specifically binding to CB1 receptors which are primarily located in the brain and central nervous system.

THC vs CBD

While THC and CBD (Cannabidiol) are both cannabinoids found in the same plant, they have very different effects:

  • THC is psychoactive. It produces euphoria, alters perception, increases appetite, and can cause deep relaxation.
  • CBD is non-psychoactive. It does not produce a high and is commonly used for its reported anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and calming properties.

Products containing both THC and CBD often provide a more balanced experience, as CBD can modulate and soften the intense psychoactive effects of THC.

Common Effects of THC

The effects of THC vary significantly depending on the dose, the method of consumption, and the individual's tolerance. Common effects include:

  • Euphoria and mood elevation
  • Deep physical relaxation
  • Altered perception of time and space
  • Increased appetite ("the munchies")
  • Heightened sensory awareness

Methods of Consumption

How you consume THC dramatically changes the onset time and duration of effects:

  • Inhalation (Vapes, Flower): Onset is nearly immediate (1-5 minutes). Effects typically peak within 30 minutes and last 1-3 hours.
  • Ingestion (Edibles): Onset is slow (30-90+ minutes) as the THC must pass through the digestive system and liver. Effects are significantly stronger and last much longer (4-8 hours).
  • Sublingual (Oils/Tinctures): Drops placed under the tongue absorb directly into the bloodstream. Onset is moderate (15-45 minutes) and lasts 3-6 hours.

Harm Reduction & Safety

We strongly advocate for the "start low and go slow" approach, especially with edibles and high-potency concentrates. Always allow adequate time to feel the effects before consuming more. Do not drive or operate machinery while under the influence of THC. If you experience anxiety or paranoia, move to a calm environment, stay hydrated, and remember that the effects will pass.
